Hello, I have lots of these in my garden now, do you know what they are? The numbers on my paving are worrying me. Thanks for any help you can give.
CLOSED: Any idea what this is?
This appears to be a larva of a fly in the family Tipulidae (crane flies) - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly. The larvae of some terrestrial species known as leatherjackets can be turf pests, feeding on the roots of grasses.
Thanks Flapdoodle. In your opinion there’s no other possibility for these? I’ve been receiving all sorts of suggestions so far. Is there a way of controlling these / eradicating from the garden as there are hundreds in my garden.
From what I can see in your images, I am reasonably sure that these are crane fly larvae. Only a few species of these out of the thousands of species that comprise this family ever cause enough damage to warrant control; the vast majority feed on decomposing organic matter in soil or water. See https://gardening.which.co.uk/hc/en-gb/articles/115000185985-Leatherjackets got more on the subject.
Thank you Flapdoodle!
