North Carolina spider. What is it?

The spider is about an inch and a half across and make some of the biggest website I’ve ever seen. The webs are very simple in construction.

An orb weaver; looks like a Neoscona sp. that has been sprayed with/dipped in something. They can make some very impressive webs.
