I just bought several flowering crabapple trees that will stand 15-20' at maturity and will be 15' wide. I'm trying to decide where to locate them in my rural farmyard. I want a couple near my vegetable garden; I was thinking I'd plant them 10 feet or so from the south garden border to hide a view of some unsightly large grain bins. Does anyone else here have crab apple trees near their vegetable garden and are there any problems? I was wondering especially if these trees' roots stay reasonably compact. I'm willing to water my garden a little more near where I plant them to compensate, but I don't want to hit tree roots while digging to plant vegetables. Soil here is sandy loam, if that makes a difference in how the tree roots will grow.
Are crab apple trees near vegetable garden okay?
Thanks for the link!
