this is on a beam outside our front door. Can anyone identify it? thanks.

These are 'nests' constructed by wasps known as mud daubers, these occur in the families Sphecidae and Crabronidae. From the appearance of these nests, I would consider the species Sceliphron caementarium a likely candidate. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_and_yellow_mud_dauber
