Sunflower Stem turning brown

Hi
What is happening to my sunflower, the stem is turning brown and the leaves are yellow. Thanks for your advise

Overwatering perhaps?
Or possibly one of the many tiny multi-legged varmits that lay an egg on the stem with the subsequent larvae burrowing into the stem of the plant i.e.: somewhat like squash vine borers.
Just guesses on my part.
