Harry Lauder Walkingstick

West Bend, WI

I thought Harry Lauder Walkingstick didn’t produce nuts? Mine is 12 years old and always produced catkins only. Yesterday I was looking at it and there’s about a dozen and a half nuts. No, I don’t have hazelnut trees and there are none I know of growing in this area. I’m planting some of the nuts this fall. I’ll let everyone know what happens next spring!

In Europe, cultivars of this shrub are commercially grown for nut production. Numerous cultivars exist. In the U.S., Oregon is the center for nut production.

That is so cool! I used to have a Contorta in a big pot years ago. I loved it! I guess they usually do not produce nuts, but can. You got lucky!

"This contorted cultivar is more commonly sold in commerce than species plants. Although species cultivars and hybrids are sometimes grown commercially for nut production, Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick usually does not produce fruit (nuts)."

Out of all the 14+ years I've had mine, I think I got two "nuts". The male catkins are large and many while the female blooms are miniscule and seem rarer than their male counterparts..
