Small slug like caterpillar approximately 1 inch.

This is a larva of a sawfly in the family Tenthredinidae; it might be in the genus Dimorphopteryx. Sawfly larvae may be differentiated from caterpillars by having fleshy prolegs on all abdominal segments; caterpillars never have prolegs on their first two abdominal segments (immediately behind the six true legs).
