We have always called this plant Japonica. It is heirloom. My grandmother grew them, and her mother, etc. I cannot find anything similar to it anywhere.
It blooms about February. It blooms and then puts on leaves. The plant is more like sticks.
It doesn't get but about 3' or so tall.
I found information on it once. It was listed as being in the pomegranate family. Its flowers are similar to pomegranate.
I find camellia japonica, but that is not the same thing.
Japonica
Photos will go far.
Maybe your mystery shrub is Chaenomeles japonica aka Japanese flowering quince?
