Hi all! I’m hoping I can get some helpful guidance and reassurance. I’m a relatively new home gardener. For whatever reason, every Shasta daisy I’ve planted has either died or just won’t grow, and every salvia has just plain died. My most recent salvia started out about 3” tall, grew to about 12”’ and now the leaves are starting to die from the ground up. While it IS our rainy season in FL, May was the wettest on record, and we’ve gotten about 8” in the past week, so it could be root rot. However, my polianthes, sinningia, day lilies, dahlia, balloon flowers, agastache, agapanthus and others are going gangbuters.
Any thoughts, further questions, comments, suggestions welcome!
HELP! Can’t grow salvia or Shasta daisies! (Zone 9B)
PS, the salvia currently threatening to off itself is Salvia canariensis var. candissima
Maybe you're trying to grow plants that aren't adapted to your local climate. Shasta daisies / Leucanthemum need at least some cool weather to thrive. It may be just too hot and humid in your area.
Likewise for Salvia canariensis ... it's adapted to a more dry, Mediterranean type climate than Tampa. It's probably just getting overwhelmed by the heat and humidity. There are lots of other subtropical Salvias you could try instead.
