I found this dead in the centre of Montpellier, it was approx 6cm long. Any ideas what it might be?

It's a cicada, an insect that spends a few years being very quiet underground and then a couple of weeks being very noisy above ground - see https://uk.france.fr/en/provence/article/cicadas
