Milk Snake??
The shape of the spot on the back of the head, the alternating splotches on the lower sides (visible where it's climbing the step) and the pattern in the color on the body, do seem to indicate an Eastern Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum). The amount of variation within the species makes this one a bit difficult to id sometimes. A lot of them are closer to red than sandy or brown colors, and the patterning can shift a bit, too. Good job.
Is anyone else discomfited that snakes can apparently climb stairs fairly quickly? I've never seen one do that, before. Makes sense, but now I'm a lot more worried about the copperhead I found in my driveway the other day. It was a baby. There must be more of them nearby.
Juvenile eastern rat snakes also can be very similar in appearance...
Thank you all!
