Hi guys! Today watering my cacti I noticed a few nasty looking armored maggots laying beside the pot. I moved the pot and to my disgust found that there were dozens more underneath and it seems that they are living in the soil in the pot. I am surprised at this because my cacti are seldom watered so the soil is extremely dry and arid; not the typical environment for a maggot.
Being that they do not move they may either be dead or an egg casing of some sort. Any help ID’ing would be appreciated because I do not want them to be a pest to my plants!
Thanks!
Lexi

These are not plant pests, they are the larvae of a soldier fly (family Stratiomyidae), such as the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens. They feed on decomposing organic matter - see http://blacksoldierflyblog.com/
