2 flyers with long tails?

Aurora, CO

I noticed 2 of these on the bottom of a dead tree truck in some other plants when I saw this one in the first picture, it flew off and I was drawn to the other one that had this long tail (maybe 2?) dug into its hind end.. it took about a minute or so when the tail shot through ... something.. all of a sudden it had a tail as well.. it was weird.. in the second picture you see the bottom one being the one digging the tails in.. the top being the one with them out. I cant post the movie I've got, But anyways was just curious what it was. Thanks everyone for your time.

These are ichneumon wasps in the genus Megarhyssa; they are drilling into wood to deposit their eggs in the tunnels of wood wasps (family Siricidae) on whose larvae their larvae will feed. See http://naturedocumentaries.org/3843/giant-ichneumon-megarhyssa-macrurus-ovipositing/

Thank you.
