Hi all! I have a rescue (grocery store, dyed blue, almost dead) phalaenopsis that has finally started to grow a bloom spike. While I’m very excited, I’ve noticed that as the spike grows on (as well as about 10 new roots) the bottom leaves are falling lower and lower in the pot. They are still stiff and healthy, it’s as if the crown is shrinking so the joint points where the leaves connect are loosening and the leaves are now too heavy. Is this normal? Does the crown swell up before spiking and shrink as the energy is used to grow the spike?
I’m sure this orchid is happy and gravity is working against those leaves but I’m not sure if they may break or crack...
BTW this is only happening on the old leaves... from its old grocery store days (the bloom spike is between 2 of them). All the new leaves grown since then are upright and perfect.
Thank you for any advice.
