What\'s growing on the beech leaves?

Amherst, MA

I believe this is a weeping beech, but it has some weird looking growths on the leaves. Bug? virus? Dr. Seuss?

Thanks, Kell. That looks like it: galls caused by mites or aphids. Too late now, but will try to prevent next year. Good call!

That article was great wasn't it? Told you what to do too. Thankfully your tree will be fine!

Diane24:

Yes, galls on the leaves - which are simply aesthetic.

You might take and post pictures of your whole plant, and then some additional ones of the leaf attachment along the stem/branches. I think you have a form of Weeping Elm (Ulmus sp.) there, rather than any sort of Beech (Fagus sp.).

Camperdown is a common selection that has a strongly weeping/pendulous habit, and grows well in the northeast US.

It may or may not matter in your control efforts, but it will be good for you to have the proper ID.
