Hibiscus or Rose of Sharon

Three years ago I planted a hibiscus between 2 Rose of Sharon.This year the Hibiscus is growing from the root ball of a rose of sharon. The tree appears to be dead. What happened?

Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) is beautiful but it can also be quite invasive. Rose of Sharon spreads via its ample and easily germinated seeds.

I know Rose of Sharon is invasive.. It is also hibiscus.
The plant labeled "Hibiscus" migrated to the rose of sharon.
It is growing out of a different root ball.
