CLOSED: Slug or Catepillar? Eating my goldenberry leaves.

Burbank, CA

My goldenberry (and they are starting on some young comfrey) plants are being eaten up at an alarming rate by these slimy slug/caterpillars with goopy stuff all over them? I'm not sure of the goopy stuff on top is part of the creature or not. I'm in Burbank, CA ( so inland, but not too far)

What are they? What should I do to save my plants? I have some sluggo plus that I spread about two weeks ago. I can re-apply if it will help. Neem? Soap?

Thanks!!!

These are larvae of a leaf beetle in the family Chrysomelidae that cover themselves with a mass of their own fecal material as a form of camouflage. You could try applications of insecticidal soap or Neem oil, and if that doesn't work, contact your county's Cooperative Extension Service office for advice.

Very interesting. Thank you!
