Clivia disease?

Oxnard, United States

Can someone tell me what to do to fix my clivia? It's discolored and looks like it's dying, even the new growth. The others, which are planted within feet of the sick one, are doing well. Just the clivia and liriope in the center are sick. I've checked the wetness of the soil and it seems to be the same for all of the plants in this area. What's up?

There could be more than one thing affecting the clivia but it looks most like bacterial rot from too much water. The sprinkler head is right in front of the clivia and the liriope. Clivias need some dryness between waterings, especially from late fall and during the winter, so a sprinkler system on a timer may be keeping the soil too moist. It looks like mealy bugs at the base of the plant in the single photo, indicating a weakened plant. The damage is so severe, this clivia will likely not make it left in the garden. You could try potting it up to save it. Clivias like to be pot-bound. Remove the damaged leaves and roots and use a q-tip with some dilute alcohol to wipe off the mealy bugs, then plant in a pot no larger than 6" with a good quality, well-draining sterile potting soil. Let the soil dry out between waterings--the leaves will droop when they need more water. Check online for more information about growing clivias in containers. Good Luck!
