I just bought a cactus labled as a blue barrel cactus. it is in a 4 inch pot that is 5 inches tall. I want to repot it so it has some room to grow but am having trouble figuring out what size pot to put it in. all the sites say next size up what ever that is. I also read that you don't want to go to big because it might cause root rot.
would an 11 inch pot be too big.
repotting a cactus
I would think 11 inch pot would be way too big. Next pot up would be a 5 inch or 6 inch pot. More important might be the soil you use. You want it to be fast draining and fast drying. The roots will not like sitting in wet soil. Make sure you use a cactus soil or blend.
thanks I think I will probably get a 6 or 7 inch pot. I was thinking about making a mix with 2 thirds kellog brand potting soil and 1 third sand. do you think that would work
would you add coconut coir to the mix or is that only for tropical cactus.
Sorry, I am not familiar with Kellog potting soil. I always used Miracle Grow Cactus Palm and Citrus Potting Mix.. It always worked great even in our rainy winters.
Coir is to retain moisture, I believe so not sure that would be good. I used it briefly for just regular flowering plants and they all died. LOL So I never used it again.
I know pumice, maybe instead of added sand, might work better. You could google cactus mix recipes and get some ideas.
Being lazy, I just bought the already made cactus mix.
