Larva? Crane fly?

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

He is about the size of a nickel when curled up, flips back and forth rapidly. Any ideas?

Image is not clear enough for a positive i.d. - if you can see any legs on it, it would not be a crane fly larva, but more likely a caterpillar in the family Noctuidae or Erebidae.

No legs. That's why I guessed crane fly. I have a video of it wiggling but can't post the video here. And thank you, kind sir. Your knowledge is astounding.

ladyannne - If you still have access to this critter, try placing it in a refrigerator for 30 minutes or so, then take it out and take some still photos before it starts to move again. My father used this technique back in the 1930s to get good still images of otherwise uncooperative grasshoppers...
