Are my purple gem rhododendrons dead?

Bridgeport, WV

Just bought these last week...were beautiful with lots of flowers! Was prepping everything to plant this week and a few days ago the plants looked terrible...loss of flowers and turning brown! I’ve been watering them well and giving them outdoor sunshine...put them in the garage overnight. Are they dying...should I even plant them?

They look great to me. I see lots of new growth and no dead leaves. The flowers sadly come and then go. This makes it so special when they bloom in spring. This is a great time to plant. Spring gives everything a boost to thrive. Just make sure you do not over water.

you can always dead head ie remove the flowers and you will not only encourage more regular growth but also improve the aesthetic appeal

It seems to me the blooms are spent. A flower blooms then dies and turns brown while new buds bloom. You have nice looking leaves and lovely blooms. Just gently remove the spent ( brown) blooms. My begonias do this all summer.
