Getting ready to plant but water requirements differ?

Fort Wayne, IN

Hello there!
I'm getting ready to plant my second annual raised garden bed. Last year I had some good results but would like to do even better this year. My husband wants some HOT peppers and he says they don't need to be watered as often so they can "stress" over the summer and become nice and hot. This is in a bit of conflict with the other vegetables I hope to grow, and we only have one 8 by 8 garden bed. I want to plant in the best possible way to keep the hot peppers away from the other more watered vegetables (lettuce, beans, tomatoes, and bell peppers) but am not sure how to lay the bed out. Before I dig in, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how to keep the peppers drier than the other vegetables, or what layout to suggest? We have a slight downhill slope on the garden so my best thought was to put the peppers at the top of the slope and just lay a soaker hose down through the rest of the rows. Is there a water barrier I can buy and slide down into the dirt maybe? thanks for your suggestions I can't wait to plant and care for these lovelies!! BTW we are in Northern Indiana. :)

The uphill placement is a good idea. If you installed drip irrigation you would have more control over the water being delivered to your plants. All drip and soaked hose is measured at gallons per hour ie if it is 1 gallon per hour therefore 15 minutes is 1/4 gallon etc. you can find all the parts you need at most box stores

Thanks Hydroanthus - I'll be giving it a try.

Ummm, am late, but it also depends whch Hot Peppers you plant. Unlike MOST herbs that do get flavor from dryness, peppers need water to grow. I grow jalapenos, but I got the ones that are 'mild'. Any peppers that are hi on the 'Scoville Heat Index' will cross pollinate to other peppers such as your bell peppers, and they will get hotter. Never milder. What hot peppers are you planning on setting out?
