I waited past Easter, I waited past April Fool's day...now I have about 8, 4-5ft Plumerias in the ground and mother nature is planning on turning the AC down to the low 40s ..maybe even high 30's (PLEASE NO!) here in Huntsville, Texas. What is the best way to protect my sweeties?
Yikes! My Plumerias are in the ground!
Get lots of mulch or wood shavings and spread it thickly around the bases of the trees. Then get some black plastic and put that over the ground covering and up against the trunks of the trees tightly. Weigh down the edges of the plastic with heavy objects like rocks or whatever else you can get.
I'm not sure if Plumeria is evergreen or not... do they go into hibernation and lose their leaves? If they are are still in hibernation and the buds haven't swollen or opened, then you should be okay. If they are not hibernating or the buds are about to open, then you may want to consider covering the whole plants with black plastic for the night.
However, since they are native to your climate, I wouldn't think a couple cold nights would kill them. Damage is possible, though, especially if there is frost.
