Chinese Fringe tree losing leaves

Elk Grove, CA

Planted this Chinese Patio Fringe tree/bush early last summer, it weathered the winter ok and was looking good around Feb. It bloomed for a week or two in March and then started losing it's blooms from the bottom up. Now it's losing leaves, some of the leaves look red and some are green. Location is central California around Sacramento area. We've had some pretty good rain storms these last few weeks interspersed with sunshine.
Is there anything I can do this early in the season to fix this, I'd hate to lose it. I don't know whether to call it a tree or shrub. It's the kind that the nursery put a stick in the pot and tie the plant's trunk to. Similar to what they do to a tree rose.

I have a feeling they drop their leaves naturally as new ones grow semi-evergreen. Possibly nothing to worry about if you are getting new leaves. I'm from Sacramento too :)

Hi Lynette, Thanks for posting, I thought that might be the case too but it was just getting worse so today I decided to have a look at the root ball and found it was standing in water. I have a lot of clay in the ground here and the water doesn't drain away very quickly so I have to be very careful when I'm watering in the summer. Unfortunately I can't control the weather and I think that last heavy rain we had might have been too much for it.
I have the plant in another a plastic plant pot drying off but I can't put it back in the ground until the water level goes down. Not sure what I can do for it right now to save it. I'm afraid it's a lost cause.
