Long and Deep Container for Planting Corn

Quarryville, PA

Hello!

I'm hoping to grow a vegetable garden this year, but since I live in a second floor apartment, it will have to be on my back porch. It gets a lot of sunlight so I think it should be a good location. I already have some early spring vegetables planted which should be sprouting soon!

I bought a miniature corn variety called "Orchard Baby Sweet Corn" which is supposed to work well in planters. However, I'm looking for a planter which is long and narrow, but at least twelve inches deep for the corn roots. The closest thing I've seen are some very expensive window boxes...

Does anyone know where I could find a planter which is something close to the dimensions of 5'-9' long, at least 12" deep, and around 12" wide? I'd prefer it wasn't wood to avoid the issue of rot, but if it's below 100$ I will consider it.

I won't be planting corn for awhile still, so I have time to find something.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Corn grows best in a circle... especially in a planter. I dont like the rectangular pots, they give me fits. Corn roots dont grow down so much...you have to keep throwing dirt on the roots as they try to climb out of the soil to reach the sunlite.

Thanks, kittriana! That's some very helpful information!

I had in mind using the cornstalks as a dual-purpose privacy screen between me and the neighbors, but I guess I could also use multiple circular pots in a row. And then I'd probably be able to plant more corn anyway... That's probably what I'll end up doing.

My spinach, radishes, turnips, brussel sprouts, and peas are already growing up quickly despite many late snows. Corn planting season will be here before we know it!
