Need an Evergreen Abelia

Citrus Heights, CA

I have 3 Abelia Grandfloria. All three look identical in summer as to leaf size, color and flower size and color. Two that I bought from a nursery that is now gone, are evergreen here in Northern California. The third, an Edward Goucher drops every year. I need another one or two that are evergreen. Tempscan dip to 20F - 24F here once in a great while but 25F - 28F is more common. The two have never dropped leaves and the 3rd, an Edward Goucher always does. I have tried several of them. It is next to one of the other two Abelia that don't drop but the Edward Goucher drops ever year. Same climate identically, in fact the branches intermingle. It drops about November. The local nurseries are no help to finding additional Abelia plants that match those that do not drop. What they sell doesn't sit out over winter so I can't figure which to buy. Anyone have a suggestion? - dark leaf, standard size, although I keep it about 4' tall and wide, light pink hued flowers almost white. The leaves need to be dark green in summer to match the ones that are already there. I've tried cuttings but failed to get an additional plant, just don't seem to have the knack.

you should be able to get Abelia grandiflora to provide what your are looking for in that temperature. In the PNW, I find all abelias to be semi evergreen to evergreen depending upon the exposure. You may have ended up with a seedling variation or some other oddity

Abelia are very easy to propagate from cuttings so I'd just make a bunch of new plants from the ones you have. They grow fast enough to have full size plants in 2 years anyway.

That’s a great idea
