green poly tunnels

carmarthen, United Kingdom

Hi

are green poly tunnels any good to grow strawberries and tomatoes between April and October or should we go for clear ones?

Thanks

Hello there we use a green house grade plastic that has a 7 year life and it is clear. I have not seen green poly used out side of small residential applications. In our area our green poly structures are generally kits that are not offered in a hoop house form. What I have found growing tomatoes and strawberries in the Pacific North Western US -Western WA . For tomatoes, we grow in a 8 foot tall hoop house with galvanized piping that has been bent for the structure. We vent on the sides and ends of the house and plantings are in raised beds. If you try to grow in a very small structure, it may get too hot and you may lose blossoms. If you are going to use PVC/ irrigation pipe to save money, make use you leave it out side for a while so that it can off gas or tape the areas of the pipe that will touch the plastic, since the off gassing can cause premature break down of the plastic that you use to cover the house. You could also bend your own conduit, depending upon your set up we have used both 1/2" and 3/4" from home depot( cost effective)Drip irrigation and proper spacing is crucial, staking and pruning as well. Strawberries are about the same, keep water of the blossoms, make sure you keep them aphid free or you will see a drop off of production over time due to virus issues.
