I found these two sprigs growing next to a fence post this summer. I put them in water til they matured a little and they surprised me by turning red!
I’m guessing it’s a euonymus but what kind? That the leaves are not dense but kinda spread out makes it quite lovely, I think.
Any thoughts appreciated! (Hope the picture is ok, I’m not very techy.)

That is definitely NOT a Euonymus species of any sort - which all members have opposite arrangement of leaves along the stem.
Your image clearly shows alternate arrangement of simple leaves.
At first blush and with no other information, I would say those look like a species of Cotoneaster, of which there are several possibilities for you in Illinois.
