I am curious to know if this is what I think it is? I got my tripod out and got some good close ups. The spider was left unharmed and will remain.

CLOSED: I found this spider in my agave.
It is indeed a black widow spider, likely a southern black widow, Latrodectus mactans - see http://www.spiders.us/species/latrodectus-mactans/
