Thanks Butch. It certainly looks like a weevil but not sure a boll weevil. I enlarged it and it is not hairy and it has a bumpy back. I just looked at tons of google pics and find an exact match.

I'm afraid that you'll have to locate a specialist on Australian Curculionidae in order to pin down this one - as you may already know, there are at least 8000 described species of weevils in Australia, and this one simply is not distinctive enough to stand out from the crowd in a routine search - sorry...
