Ajuga (zone 8a)

My ajuga is doing well for the most part (first picture), but as you can see below there are several that seem to be "disolving". Any thoughts as to why this may be happening?

Any moles in the area? They can tunnel under the roots and expose them to air.
Alternatively, clumping plants exhaust the soil of the nutrients they need, this causes the middles to die off as the plant searches for the conditions they need. It is also seasons end and many of these plants are dying back. Purpose of any plant is to bloom, seed and be survived by new plants.

Yes for moles, but crown rot was an answer that made the most sense. The moles are not active right now and the ajuga should be good as they were just planted this spring. Thanks for the thoughts kitt!
