I found this little guy in my office. I always see one or two of them every year, always in late summer / early fall. I live in Calgary, Alberta. Any idea what kind of spider it is? I have my suspicions but I'd rather trust someone who knows their spider identification.
Can Someone Help Me Identify This Spider?
This is a male spider in the family Agelenidae (funnel weavers/grass spiders); it might be a giant house spider, Eratigena atrica - http://www.spiders.us/species/eratigena-atrica/
Thanks! That makes me feel better. I was worried it was Eratigena Agrestis. (Any chance it is?) Are there ways to tell them apart from a picture or would you need to see the spider?
Separation of the two species of Eratigena is problematic without examination of specific body parts under magnification. Even if it would turn out to be agrestis, I wouldn't worry over much. See http://www.spiders.us/species/eratigena-agrestis/ for detailed information on the hobo spider.
Thanks very much!
