Spider in Oregon about a half-dollar in size (it's in a huge glass). Very aggressive. Black body with dark black abdomen.

This is a male trapdoor spider, such as a folding-door trapdoor spider - see http://photokaz.com/blog/2012/08/14/antrodiaetus-pacificus-trapdoor-spider/ for an example. Males often leave their burrows to search for females, which seldom if ever leave their burrows. The behavior you interpreted as aggression actually is their defensive posture against what they perceive as a huge threatening object...
