what do I do with my rose

Westborough, MA

I moved into this house several years ago. It had been empty for 2 or 3 yrs after the owner died. She had been a gardener but most everything was gone except a little twig of a rose, in front of a little trellis (c3ft?). I moved the rose from place to place several times. It did not die and did not grow. Then in a new, very sunny spot, it got happy. It multiplied in growth and I thought perhaps it was the graft root that was growing, but this past summer it finally produced several lovely very red, old fashion, faintly fragrant flowers. It is a climber and I bought a 5ft trellis! I want to keep it but I have no idea how to care for it. I need suggestions about how to overwinter, prune and fertilize. Any advice or suggestions about where to find the information would be greatly appreciated?

Just a guess as you didn't post an pics but you may have Rosa cv. 'Dr. Huey', which is commonly used as a rootstock for grafted roses.

I believe you are right. I am always amazed at how magically plant questions are answered on Daves garden. I googled Dr. Huey rose and enjoyed reading various descriptions and opinions about it. Thanks so much, Tom
