I've never seen anything quite like this bug. Taken in Kakabeka Falls, Ontario yesterday. This is in regards to the first two pictures. There are also two different butterfly pictures that aren't super close but hopefully someone can tell me what they are. It was a great bug day in the garden.

I cannot be certain, but the insect in the first two images appears to be a grasshopper nymph that has fallen on hard times, including the loss of its hind legs. The white butterfly is one of the sulphurs in the genus Colias, perhaps a clouded sulphur - https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/54/Albino_Clouded_Sulphur%2C_MM158.jpg and the second one appears to be a fritillary in the genus Speyeria - see http://www.jeffpippen.com/butterflies/atlantisfritillary-d050805-5269mastigouchez.jpg for an example.

Well Flapdoodle I am sorry to hear the grasshopper nymph isn't looking his best. How sad is that? Thank you for all the info on my creatures. I don't know how it is you know all this but I'm glad you do. I truly appreciate all your help. Jan

Well, I first got interested in studying insects nearly 70 years ago on our family farm near Minot. In the intervening years, I've read quite a lot, and occasionally retain something useful... ;-)
