Hello I was wondering if someone can identify this black fly or moth, i am wondering if this is the bug making holes in the wood on the roof of my house with wood dust falling out of them
Black fly or moth eating wood?
It sounds like you might have Carpenter Bees in your wood roof. The photos look like Tiger Bee Flies. They lay eggs at the entrance of a Carpenter Bee nest because they eat Carpenter Bee larvae during the bee's pupal stage.
Cville_Gardener is correct - see http://www.urbanwildlifeguide.net/2011/08/carpenter-bee-and-tiger-bee-fly.html
Hello and thank you for your quick replies. yes I have noticed that carpenter bees have been making holes in the roof. I rent and the landlord does not care much so I'm not worried about the house, I was more interested in what the black fly seems pretty territorial buzzes around my head more than the bees.
