Seen in z7 on my deck, buzzing around the railing. does not seem to be after flowers at all! bigger than a horsefly.

It;s a bee fly (family Bombyliidae); specifically, a tiger bee fly, Xenox tigrinus - it is parasitic on carpenter bees - http://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/133799-Xenox-tigrinus
