A friend of mine found a cricket that was about 12 centimeters long roaming a crop field. At first glance he mistook it for a mouse (because of it's tail) but after close inspection he realized it was some sort of insect. I told him it was a cricket but
I couldn't decipher what species it was, so I'm asking here.

It looks like a female armored ground cricket (subfamily Bradyporinae in the family Tettigoniidae) - see http://www.inaturalist.org/photos/55676 for another example...
