I found this clinging to a fence picket in my backyard. Minooka Illinois, mostly zone 5. I thought it was a cicada, but it does not have orange eyes. It is a good inch and a half to two inches long.

Very nice find - this is a fly in the family Oestridae known as a rodent bot fly (Cuterebra sp.); the adult fly lacks functional mouth parts - see http://bspm.agsci.colostate.edu/files/2013/03/Rodent-Bots.pdf
