I have Electric Blue Penstemon in my garden. I think I read somewhere that one isn't supposed to deadhead Penstemon. True? Mine are blooming profusely, but some of the stems have now turned brown. It has been a wetter than usual season earlier this Spring, and I also make it a point to water regularly. Are they getting too much water (the soil is well-drained), and should I deadhead spent blossoms and/or entire stalks that have turned brown and are dying back?
Deadhead Penstemon?
Hi, I am NOT an expert but your question get me looking at the internet for info so I thought I would share. I found this very informative page on penstemon that says to deadhead but not how. https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=406 but then I found this video which seemed very interesting and informative on the subject. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2-tfrQYwqs
Thank you! The video is very informative. I know now to clip off the brown stems and leave those stalks that still have flowers, though I will remove the wilted ones.
