Last season I bought 'Hot Trumpets' from my local nursery and put the pot in the semi shade of an apple tree, it failed to thrive, no new growth, no basal rosette. But I was able to save seed from it. The plant later died.
I germinated the seed and got about 15 plants from that and set then into 9cm sg pots, most flourished, some did not. I potted on the bigger specimens. And planted some in a a border with semi shade.
Now, none are thriving
All the time I have plants dying on me, water well/water sparingly. Three potted into multi-purpose compost with added grit. Nothing is making them thrive, and I lose them at regular intervals.
I would take cuttings, but my plants don't have a decent cutting among them. None of them have decent flower spikes to harvest seed from.
I understand these plants are easy to grow, so what am I doing wrong ?
