Hickories have always given me fits if it isn't easily IDed Shagbark. This was in my brother-in-law's yard. The nut is very small, but might help ID this as possible Mockernut or Pignut.
Which Hickory
The buds and twigs will help separate the ID on this one. The immature nut probably won't.
