Too late to transplant my broccoli?

Astoria, NY

Hi there!!

New to the community and a beginner grower. I love in NYC so space is extremely limited and I can basically only grow in pots. (I'll probably post a "what can/can't you grow in pots question later!)

I am attempting broccoli - growing from seeds. I am trying my apartment' so roof because last year the moist lower are also of our courtyard had worms all over them and they were eaten up over the course of one or two nights.

This year, so far so good with them on the roof. I realized after planting and growing that broccoli really does better in the fall (I'll likely try again then) but I want to at least see if I can get one to head. As I said, I'm a very small grower as I don't have space (and the roof is technically off limits so I can only put a few pots up there without drawing attention).

So here's the question: I have two plants in one pot that is roughly 5 gallons, maybe a little smaller. They've been growing well so far, but as they are starting to fill out and get bigger I realized that both of them may be too much for the one pot.

Is it safe for me to try and take one out and transplant it to another pot or is it too late as they've been growing in this pot for almost a month? They are both roughly 8-11 inches high. Did I mess up? Or can I just add a little extra fertilizer and be mindful with them and keep them in the same pot?

Thanks so much! I'm so glad I found this community!

I totally think you're fine leaving them in the one pot. They might try and crowd each other out but in a 5 gallon pot, it might be a bit cramped, but they will do just fine. Watch the watering as it's 2 plants in limited soil and easily root-bound. You might also take a look for some winter growing veggies and, if you've got space indoors, a bit of an indoor growing shelf under lights. Just a thought.

Thanks for the info!

Sadly I don't have any indie growing space other than window sills. But I'll keep an eye on these lil broccoli and hopefully I can get one to produce me some veg!

Thanks again! I look forward to learning more via everyone on the forum!
