Any idea what this little guy is? I found him on my daughters sandbox lid in the grass so im not sure where I should put him so he can eat.

Too early an instar for a positive i.d. - might be an erebid in the subfamily Arctiinae (tiger and lichen moths)...
any suggestions as to where I should put it? tree, shrub, milkweed? other weeds?
thanks for the help, I think he is liking the elm leaf I carried him inside on, I have tons of those popping up =D
Without knowing the species, it is difficult to make a feeding recommendation. Some species will feed on a variety of plants while others are more fussy...
