What/how to plant BEHIND stand of three airy, limbed-up, single-trunk amelanchiers?

Woodstock, VT

In a 25 foot wide garden bed we planted a stand of three airy, limbed-up, single-trunk amelanchiers about 8-9 feet (to allow for spread) from, and parallel to, an ugly double-height garage wall. Because the bed is open from both sides, there is now a large amount of empty space between the trees and the wall. (In front of the trees are a couple of dwarf magnolias and a range of ornamental grasses and other perennials.) My question is, aside from low groundcovers, what could we plant BEHIND the tall airy trees? We're familiar with the classic idea of descending heights from back of border to front (trees, then shrubs, then perennials, etc), but we wanted the amelanchiers to have plenty of room in which to grow, so now we have this problem. We do want to do something with that back space as the bed is very prominent in the overall garden. Would a row of 4-5 feet high shrubs or evergreens be a faux pas? There is plenty of sun behind because the bed faces southwest. Zone 4b/5. Many thanks in advance for anything that might come to mind.
