Using shredded paper

Is there any use for finely shredded paper in the garden, possibly as a mulch or to lighten the soil?

Shredded paper works great for the browns in a compost pile. Or you could do Lasagna gardening with shredded paper then, some grass clippings, then a layer of shredded paper etc.
