Am I correct in that this is a Flat-Headed Borer? My book doesn't show any orange on the rear and it doesn't have a picture of the bottom side.
CLOSED: Flat-Headed Borer?
This is indeed an adult flat-headed wood borer, namely Buprestis rufipes, sometimes called a jewel beetle - http://ecographica.blogspot.com/2009/07/field-photo-buprestis-rufipes.html. Just FYI, the term "flat-headed wood borer" usually applies to the larval stage of these beetles. Collectively, the adults are usually are termed metallic wood-boring beetles.
Thanks for the clarification!!
