Very common flying insect, I just dont know the name!

Clearwater, FL

Hi All,

Every day I have swarms of these very small flying insects on my patio screen. They are a very common insect, but for the life of me I don’t know their names. I want to get rid of them but the “Flying Insect Raid” I bought is not working; so I need to identify them to determine what I should use. Here are some facts:

• I live in FL.
• My patio faces a small lake.
• They are worst in the day and early morning.
• They aren’t mosquitos…they don’t bite.
• Don’t think they’re gnats…they seem bigger than gnats.
• They are very fast flyers.
• They look like they may have a yellowish color.

Please help!!

I cannot see enough detail in your image to be certain of an identification; my best guess is that they are non-biting midges in the family Chironomidae - see http://www.aquaticinsects.org/Images/Diptera/Chironomidae/chiro1miles.jpg for an example. The color of these insects can be quite variable, including shades of yellow, green, and brown. These strictly are nuisance pests, and complete control usually is not practical, simply because their larval habitat sites are so numerous and widespread.
