Hello....I have a place in my backyard flower bed where I would like to add some kind of tree ( preferably evergreen). Tell me the best trees or shrubs for feeding bluebirds. I would like to attract more to my yard. I have a b&b house and they use to nest but last year they did not. I just want to provide food for them. Thanks!!!
Attracting bluebirds
The best tree for bluebirds and many other birds is the Cornus florida, native Dogwood. In fact, more birds eat the berries from the Dogwood than any other tree.
Another good shrub is Viburnum plicatum tomentosum but you will need two of them that are a different cultivar to cross polinate. For example: Viburnum plicatum tomentosum 'Shasta' and Viburnum plicatum tomentosum 'Snowflake'. They are gorgeous shrubs and the dogwood is beautiful also. Both of them are not only enjoyable to the birds but also to humans providing three seasons of interest.
I also supplement my bluebirds with mealworms. Bluebirds also like cedars. They eat the cedar berries. You will get lots more recommendations from the bird forum.
We almost settled in Jenks, Oklahoma.
Thank you! I have been very interested in getting a dogwood as well. The spot I have is in a flower bed, I need a smal shrub like tree for that spot.
How interesting that you almost moved to Jenks!!! Small world!
