Termites? Or something else?

Cupertino, CA

We were walking passed my succulent garden when my 6-year old nephew brought these to my attention. He said that they're termites and for the next 10 minutes, I knew more about termites than I really wanted (it was a coincidence too that he just borrowed a book about termites last Wednesday from his school library!). He's been into bugs and insects since he can walk so a big part of me believed him. I looked up pictures of termites online, which he suggested I should do, but I couldn't find exactly like this to verify. Can anyone help me identify what these things are and why they would possibly be in my garden? And what do I do with them?

These do resemble the earthen tubes constructed by eastern subterranean termites, but those usually are constructed against some object rather than free-standing - see http://www.hartzpestcontrol.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Subterranean_termite_tube-_Found_in_east_Houston-_3-15-2016.jpg for an example. One way to be certain would be to open some of them. If they are hollow, they likely are termite tubes, and if your timing is good, you might see the actual termites - http://cleanandtreat.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Screen-Shot-2016-07-28-at-1.11.49-AM.png

Thank you. I need to build up the courage to do that.
